FAQ

General

What is Words?

Words is a MIDI sequencer that transforms text into musical patterns. Instead of placing notes on a grid, you type words and phrases, and Words converts them into MIDI that you can send to your DAW and instruments.

What makes the patterns?

Behind the scenes, Words uses algorithms to convert text characters into note values, timings, and velocities. The specific algorithms are designed to produce musically interesting results while remaining unpredictable enough to surprise you.

Is this AI-generated music?

No. Words doesn't use machine learning or AI. It uses deterministic algorithms to transform text into MIDI. The same text will always produce the same pattern. The "intelligence" is in the algorithm design, not in training data.

Can I use Words commercially?

Yes. Any MIDI or music you create with Words is yours. There are no royalties or credits required.

Technical

What macOS version do I need?

Words requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later.

Does it work on Intel Macs?

Yes. Words runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Does Words make sound?

No. Words generates MIDI data only. You need a DAW (like Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or FL Studio) with virtual instruments to hear the results.

Can I use Words with hardware synths?

Yes, if your hardware synth accepts MIDI input. Route Words through your DAW or use a MIDI interface to send MIDI from Words to your hardware.

Purchase & Licensing

How many Macs can I use Words on?

Your license allows activation on up to 2 Macs at a time.

Is there a trial version?

Not currently. However, we offer a 30-day refund policy - if Words isn't for you, you can get a full refund, no questions asked.

Do I need an internet connection to use Words?

Only for initial activation. After that, Words works offline.

Will I get updates?

Yes. Your purchase includes all updates to the current major version. Words checks for updates automatically.

Troubleshooting

Why isn't my DAW seeing Words?

Make sure Words is running before you open your DAW. Some DAWs only scan for MIDI devices at launch. See MIDI Setup for detailed instructions.

The patterns are too chaotic. How do I get simpler results?

Use shorter phrases. A two or three word phrase creates a simpler, more focused pattern than a full sentence.

Can I control the scale or key?

Yes. Words has 99 built-in scales across 17 categories - from Western modes to Japanese scales, Indian ragas, Middle Eastern modes, and more. Set the root note (C through B) and base octave to control the key. Use transpose presets (1-8) to shift patterns on the fly.

Can I do chords or polyphony?

Yes. Each loop can have up to 5 voice layers, each at a different interval. But it's more than just chords - each voice has independent randomization (gate chance, velocity, octave shifts). So voices drop in and out independently, turning static chords into evolving arpeggio-like textures.

How do I use Words for drums?

Enable drum mode on a loop. This ignores the text-derived pitch and uses a fixed MIDI note instead - you get the rhythm from your text but a consistent note to trigger a drum sound.
